What Is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO), and Why Malaysian Businesses Are Already Losing Traffic To It

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your business information so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini can retrieve it, understand it, and name you in an answer. It matters because a growing share of buyer research now ends inside the AI answer, with no click to any website at all. If the model cannot read you, you are not in the shortlist.
That is the short version. Here is what it actually means for a Malaysian business.
What changed
For twenty years the deal with search was simple. You wrote a page, Google ranked it, someone clicked, they landed on your site. Traffic was the currency and rankings were the scoreboard.
That deal is breaking. When a business owner asks ChatGPT "who does HRD Corp claimable digital marketing training in Kuala Lumpur", the model does not hand back ten blue links. It hands back a short answer with two or three names in it. The person reads the answer and acts on it. No click happens. Nobody visits your website. Your analytics show nothing.
You did not lose a ranking. You lost a mention.
Share of Model: the metric that replaces traffic
The number that matters now is how often your business appears when a model answers a question in your category. Call it Share of Model.
It is measurable. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overview the ten questions your buyers actually ask, and write down whether your name comes up, what it says about you, and who it names instead. Most Malaysian businesses have never run this test. When they do, the usual result is that they are invisible, or worse, that the model describes them wrongly using an old bio from a directory listing they forgot existed.
That second outcome is more common than people expect, and it is the more expensive one.
Why AEO is not just SEO with a new name
There is real overlap. Both reward genuine authority and a technically clean site. But three things are meaningfully different.
Answer engines retrieve passages, not pages. A model does not rank your article. It pulls the two sentences inside it that answer the question. If your answer is buried in paragraph nine after a story about your journey, it will not be pulled. Put the answer first, in plain language, in the first forty to sixty words.
Models resolve entities, not keywords. A model is trying to work out whether "Rise Digital", "Rise System Consulting" and "Stephanie Lam" refer to one thing or three. It does that by looking for the same facts, spelled the same way, across many independent sources. Every inconsistent spelling of your business name, every different job title in a bio, every conflicting number splits your entity and lowers the model's confidence in citing you.
Off-site mentions count more than links. In classic SEO, a backlink passes authority. In AEO, an unlinked mention of your name in a credible article, a directory, a review, or an event page still teaches the model who you are and what you do. Being written about matters more than being linked to.
The three things that decide whether a model names you
Can it read you. Structured data on your pages (Organization, Person, Course, Event, FAQ), a clear page per real question, and specifics stated as facts rather than implied through design. A price in a graphic is invisible. A price in text is retrievable.
Can it verify you. The same business name, registration number, email, founder name and credentials on your website, your Google Business Profile, your LinkedIn, your HRD Corp listing, and any directory you appear in. Identical, not similar.
Can it trust you. Named clients, real numbers, dated results, third-party mentions. A model weighs corroboration. One claim on your own website is an assertion. The same claim visible in three places becomes a fact.
What this looks like in practice for a Malaysian SME
Start with the query set. Write down the ten to fifteen questions a buyer would type or ask before choosing someone like you. Not keywords, questions. "Is this claimable under HRD Corp." "How much does this cost." "Who does this in Kuching." "Is this worth it for a team of eight."
Then run each one through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and record the answer. That is your baseline, and it takes an afternoon.
Then fix the entity before you write a single new article. Content published on top of an inconsistent entity does not compound, because the model cannot attribute it to anyone.
Then, and only then, build one page per question, answered in the first two sentences, with the depth underneath.
The uncomfortable part
Most businesses reading this will do the audit, find they are invisible, and go straight to writing blog posts. That is the wrong order. The audit almost always shows a foundation problem first: two versions of the business name, a bio that says one thing on the site and another on LinkedIn, a services page with no prices, no schema anywhere.
Fix the foundation. The content works after that.
FAQ
Is AEO different from GEO? Mostly a naming difference. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) describe the same work: making your business retrievable and citable by AI models.
Does AEO replace SEO? No. Google still sends real traffic and a technically sound site serves both. AEO is an additional layer, not a replacement.
How long before it shows results? Entity and structured data fixes can change how models describe you within weeks. Building enough off-site corroboration to be named consistently takes longer, typically a few months of steady publishing and mentions.
Can I do this myself? The audit, yes, in an afternoon. The entity clean-up, yes, if you are willing to be pedantic about consistency. The content system is where most owners stall, because it needs to be sustained.
